The incumbent of this position is the subject matter expert in the maintenance of institution vehicles and therefore, works with a great deal of independence. The incumbent must be a journeyman level mechanic and have the ability to establish priorities for preventive maintenance schedules for the vehicles. They must also ensure that all necessary repairs are made to ensure that the vehicles are safe for transport of staff and inmates. Special skills are needed to complete work through the use of inmate workers. The incumbent must be able to counsel and work with convicted felons in order to challenge them to complete work, while keeping in mind the personal security and safety risks. The incumbent is responsible for hazardous material handling, meeting OSHA requirements, environmental issues and adhering to safety procedures (e.g. Forklift Operation, Lockout/Tag-out, etc.). Incumbent ensures inmates comply with Institution and OSHA Safety Regulations through example and lectures. The incumbent will be responsible for the ordering and purchasing of all material/equipment needed to perform assigned projects. The majority of the purchases will be done with the use of a government credit card. The incumbent will be knowledgeable in the Facilities department database Computerized Maintenance and Management Software (CMMS) and be able to input and retrieve pertinent maintenance data. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis. To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Applicants must have had sufficient training and experience to show their ability to perform the duties of the position. To qualify for this position, you MUST meet the Barely Acceptable level on both screen-out elements (Ability to supervise) and (Aptitude for work with prisoners); receive at least one half of the total possible points; AND you must furnish detailed information on your resume to support your assessment responses to demonstrate that you clearly possess the experience and skills to successfully perform the duties of this position at the journeyman level.
